McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up. Hayes playing it forward, Bell being forced to do it all alone, now forward from Marr, here's Ritchie, still Andy Ritchie, look at the control... That is a marvellous goal from Andy Ritchie. Twenty minutes on the clock and Morton's supporters come alive. A goal which epitomises the control, the arrogance, the cheek of Andy Ritchie. An eventful night. United manager was badmouthing us in the press (over his sacking during the Hitler era) and this was not taken well by DDFR. Future Ton player Andy McLaren scored for United. Stewards and police standing in our way constantly making us sit down (amusingly, once trying to do this as we scored). TorontoTon
Here is a first-hand report from my teenage dad of the loss at Motherwell on Sep 23, 1944: 4th League Trophy match away, at Firhill Motherwell (1) 4 – 2 (2) Greenock MortonScorers: McAloon, Crum Team: Johnstone, Higgins, Highet, Campbell, Aird, White, Kelly, Garth, Crum, McAloon, McInnes. The game was played in pouring rain throughout, with Morton kicking toward the north in the first half. The first noteworthy incident was when McGowan sent a shot over the bar direct from a free on Morton's penalty line. Then Kelly drove strongly over the bar following some fine dribbling by Crum. Next, McAloon found himself on Motherwell's right goal-line before shooting strongly at Motherwell 'keeper Johnstone (both 'keepers with the same surname) who beat the ball to the ground before clearing. Higgins prevented David Mathie from breaking right through at the other end with a slide-tackle to give away a corner. Then began a siege of the Morton goal, which ended with Hamilton driving over the bar from 35 yards. Soon afterwards Kelly brought Morton back to the attack, and following a corner the ball returned to him and he sent over a lovely ball which reached head height at the far left post where McALOON headed past the staggering Johnstone for the opening goal.A Morton forward passing movement ended with Crum's shot being held by Johnstone. A strong McGowan rising shot was well tipped-over the Morton bar by Johnstone. Then from a mix-up on Morton's left rear, the ball came to Russell who was almost at the penalty line and he shot a grounder so fast that it passed between Higgins' legs and inside the left post. Not long after a Kelly lob from the half-way line was continued on its way by a CRUM header over the goalkeeper's clutching hands for Morton's second goal. Morton's Johnstone next safely tipped over a Russell free and then pushed a Watson try past the lower left of his goal for a corner. That was half-time, with Morton leading. The second half started with two long tries safely smothered by Morton's Johnstone. Kelly on the right goal-line works along near the goal before flicking over the diving Johnstone to McInnes, who steadies but nevertheless shoots blindly at defender Hamilton standing on the goal-line who was able to clear. Aird then just manages to prevent a Mathie break, but concedes a corner in doing so. From the corner, Mathie on the left crossed to an unmarked an in-rushing Gibson who from 15 yards out crashes a rising shot which Johntsone can only palm against the upright and in for Motherwell's equaliser. A Gillan shot following a McGowan corner was well held by Johnstone for Morton, before a Kelly slicing of a shot spoils a promising Morton attempt to re-take the lead. Then Watson collided with Aird in the air, leaving Aird with concussion and out of the game. Soon after the ball went to Gibson whose low shot was scooped to McGowan's feet and them home past Johnstone, with Highet failing to mark closely enough. Motherwell then sealed the game when a strong Mathie shot was stopped by Johnstone only for Gibson to score from the rebound.Star player: Crum.
