TheGoon
D’you know the origins of it? That isn’t to say everyone who’s blacked up does, but it’s probably why it should be avoided.
EanieMeany
Considering there's a white supermacist in the White House, the UK government are deporting non-white citizens, non-white people are regularly attacked for their skin colour, far-right parties are gaining traction across Europe with inherently racist policies amongst god knows many other things, then yes, dressing up as a black person (and patently in a derogatory sense - nobody's dressing up as looky looky man as some kind of tribute) is fundamentally racist. The assertion that it's OK because white people think it's funny and their sense of humour is more important than very real racial discrimination is also inherently racist. At very very best, it's incredibly obnoxious, but when you're not giving a **** about anybody else on matters of skin colour, then that just brings us back to it being racist. TONofmemories
Seems to me that folk are going out their way to get offended. As i say, IMO, it's far more offensive to dress up as Jimmy Saville for example...... TIME FOR CHANGE!

TONofmemories
Can't agree, sorry. Not sure why we're bringing white supremacy within America etc into an isolated costume/fancy dress. I can perhaps concede the point about the lookylooky having no relevance, but what happens if its your favourite black footballer/basketball player. Racist to dress up as them because they'te not white? Behave. TIME FOR CHANGE!
LargsTON
I think referring to Trump as a white supremacist is stretching it a bit tbh. I'm with ToM on this. "CORNBEEF IS A BELLEND"

TRVMP
I think referring to Trump as a white supremacist is stretching it a bit tbh. I'm with ToM on this. They don't actually believe this, they just say he is to try to shame his supporters. It's like when a kid's having a tantrum and says to his parents "you hate me, don't you?!" to force a denial. Now, that said, I've never heard Trump explicitly deny dressing up as a looky looky man.
TRVMP
Can't agree, sorry. Not sure why we're bringing white supremacy within America etc into an isolated costume/fancy dress. I can perhaps concede the point about the lookylooky having no relevance, but what happens if its your favourite black footballer/basketball player. Racist to dress up as them because they'te not white? Behave. "Blacking up" is widely seen as a continuation of the tradition of minstrelsy and blackface, and while that originated in the southern United States, it took very popular root in the UK as well. Somewhat inexplicably, The Black and White Minstrel Show ran on the BBC for around 20 years and got massive ratings most of the time. You simply can't separate blacking up from this historical context. So the US connection does matter. You might argue that a young guy who probably never heard of minstrels or the TV show shouldn't have to suffer for the sins of the father, but it's still well within living memory for a lot of people and in any case was widely seen as insulting. Even the more "generous" portrayals in blackface tended to emphasize the supposedly childlike and capricious character of blacks in the American South. Damning with faint praise, really. And if you show up as a totally exaggerated version of a looky looky man, it's playing off that same tradition. The footballer/basketball player point is a tougher one because nobody's going to mistake that for the same thing. In that case I think it's simply better to be cautious. You can call it unfair, and maybe it is, but it's a relatively small sacrifice to make, not dressing up like LeBron.

TheGoon
Agreed with TRVMP, and as has already been pointed out, disregarding an entire race’s view on the matter because you’re fine with iit is part of the problem. It isn’t your call to make, at all.
