Squad and transfers 2019/20

Hej

Certainly, aye, but you wouldn't go passing up somebody like Nesbitt for them, especially when the rest of your squad comprises of English ringers and Brechin rejects.

Don't get me wrong, i'm pleased withthe Nesbitt signing (if true).

Harsh on the other signings. Scepticism is correct, especially with how much the club continuing to shout 'reduced budget' at every opportunity making us naturally unsure of the level of player we are signing, but i'd much rather a team of limited triers than some of the chancers we've been subjected to.

It's not really harsh at all, it's what they are. The English guys are totally unproven with no real way of knowing what they can do at our level - just ask Falkirk and St Mirren fans how signings like that went for them - and Orsi didn't (apparently) get a new deal at Brechin after being relegated twice, so in that context somebody like Nesbitt would be a particularly good addition.

No, it quite clearly is actually harsh to call them 'ringers' and 'rejects' without knowing anything about them.

Falkirk and St Mirren signed youths without a first team game amongst them and, certainly in Falkirk's case, hadn't even seen them play so their suitability to play in a tough, competitive league was completely unknown. Add to that the fact they flooded the team with them and it was a recipe for disaster.

Easy to label ours as the same but they are actually quite different in that respect and quite happy to have gambles on a few with the experienced core we have.

Obviously they are still unproven to us and their suitability for this level is unknown but willing to give a bit of trust on that one at the moment.

Orsi wasn't getting a new deal - because they couldn't afford to due to the aforementioned relegations so the tag 'reject' is indeed harsh (granted he is the signing i'm most sceptical about).

I think that's harsh on the new signings. They've all signed quite early on in the window to suggest they are high up the priority list and Hopkin seems to know enough about them to show he wants them.

It's not like the usual last minute signings.

The exact same thing could be said for the parade of donkeys that Paul Hartley 'swooped' for last summer. It doesn't guarantee anything.

The site is supposed to be a place for the extended 'family' of Morton supporters - having an affinity with people that you don't know, because you share a love of your local football club. It's not supposed to be about point scoring and showing how 'clever' or 'funny' you are, or just being downright rude and offensive to people you don't know, because you can get away with it. Unfortunately, it seems the classic case of people who have little standing/presence in real life, use this forum as a way of making themselves feel as if they are something. It's sad, and I've said that before..

So, having been on Morton forums for about 15 years I guess, I've had enough... well done t*ssers, another Morton supporter driven away. You can all feel happy at how 'clever' you are

So... they're ringers then. I'm really sure why we're no longer supposed to call a spade a spade here - the club has signed players with no demonstrable record at this level. That's a gamble that could either succeed far more than the jobbers we'd have got from the usual transfer merry-go-round, or it could prove an absolute disaster.

Met young Nesbitt just before he signed for MK Dons and we had a conversation about his future and he said that he thought his best position was sentre forward. So maybe Hoppy is of a similar mind as his speed could, maybe, make him the new Alex Williams?

Aye, this. It could, of course, turn out well but until the season gets underway then these guys are what they are and, just to repeat my point, make guys like Nesbitt even more attractive signings as we at least know know what he's all about.

According to the interview on the official site, Robbie Muirhead has been told that he'll be playing as a striker. Would Nesbitt be foil for him? Interesting times.

Player who nobody has ever heard of and comes from an obscure level = a ringer.

No idea why you think it means 'unfairly writing someone off before they've kicked a ball!!!!!1111!!!!!!' instead, but here we are.

Ringer = imposter = (in this context) someone who looks like a footballer but isn't, and we can all name a few.

So we'll know soon enough which if any are ringers after we have seen them play.

yup that's what I was assuming that it meant too, but apparently we were both wrong.

I assume Hopkin has some idea what he is doing.  Ringer is maybe a fair description given the we know nothing about some of the players he has signed, but if said ringers turn out to be decent footballers and Hopkin has selected them because he knows what they can do (as opposed to "because they are playing for very little money"), he needs to be given credit.  My gut feeling is that Hopkin has a game plan, and that is something you couldn't say about JJ or indeed Duffy.  I am cautiously optimistic that this coming season we may actually get more than we are expecting in terms of team performance.  I'd still like to know what Hopkins really thinks about Dylan Dykes though...

"Any nation given the opportunity to regain its national sovereignty and which then rejects it is so far beneath contempt that it is hard to put words to it."

He’s thinks Dykes, Dylan is a fantastic man!

Don’t we all?

And not for the first time either.

Indeed, far from it.  Every day your posts are a linguistic education to me.  it was only thanks to you that I learned "gubbins" is an adjective meaning "not very good" as opposed to a collective noun for a collection or assortment of bits and pieces.  Thanks to your wisdom I can now construct a sentence such as "Vikington is a ringer and his patter is absolute gubbins"

It's just a wee shame that your sentence doesn't actually make any sense though; not least because an adjective like gubbins is qualified by an adverb (e.g. 'absolutely') and not another adjective.

Better luck next time champ.

The adjectives may have been used cumulatively.
