January Transfer Window Thread

If you want a good player, chances are you'll need to get him quickly. Everybody's after a quick-fix in the January window, if you fanny about then you're probably not going to get the pick of the bunch, that's right out the McInally playbook.

Alternatively, clubs might not let the good ones go until they have sorted their own business.

The only teams who prioritise signing players quickly in the January window are ones that are absolutely dire on the park - Falkirk; Partick; us in 13-14. Gobbling up free agents who last played well years ago and the first scraps to fall from the table elsewhere is their MO.

Everyone else has scope to assess their options and that's the position that we (and the club releasing/loaning decent players) are in right now.

The site is supposed to be a place for the extended 'family' of Morton supporters - having an affinity with people that you don't know, because you share a love of your local football club. It's not supposed to be about point scoring and showing how 'clever' or 'funny' you are, or just being downright rude and offensive to people you don't know, because you can get away with it. Unfortunately, it seems the classic case of people who have little standing/presence in real life, use this forum as a way of making themselves feel as if they are something. It's sad, and I've said that before..

So, having been on Morton forums for about 15 years I guess, I've had enough... well done t*ssers, another Morton supporter driven away. You can all feel happy at how 'clever' you are

Maybe, but chances are the guy wasn't getting a game in the first place. Either way, the idea that teams are only beginning to evaluate their squads now and that moving quickly increases the chances of landing rubbish is utterly absurd.

Robbie Neilson says you're talking pish though:

But what would he know about it; he's only a manager at the same level trying to improve a crap Dundee United side with far more resources at his disposal than Morton have got.

Jim McInally said the same thing and always ended up with duds. We had a new manager come in after the season started. the idea that he's not already fully aware of the areas he wants to improve and that he hasn't been actively scouting players and making enquiries isn't at all credible.

If there's areas a manager wants to improve, chances are he'll have his targets identified and want to secure them quickly. They're not sitting there waiting until 1st January before getting their wee black book out.

Is that the lad in the picture behind JJ being shared on Twitter?

ETA: Having now Googled Atakayi I’m not sure that’s him in the pic (though it’s not exactly a clear shot).

Also: how do we embed photos in to posts these days? No using the … things anymore?

Somebody tweeted the club on Friday suggesting we had a Nigerian called Samson Ayodele training with us. Can't find much on the guy so probably nothing to it but that's not Atakayi.

Jim McInally did not say 'the same thing' and in any case, Neilson is a far more credible source on what is happening at this level now than some bumbling time-honoured failure working at Peterhead.

That's true but it still doesn't change the timescale at all if the players you are targeting are contracted to other clubs. Until they say so, you can't speak to them or sign them. That's the situation that ourselves, Dundee United and every club that isn't an absolute basketcase are currently in at this level.

These are facts, but I'll stick with fact-based analysis supported by someone who can attest to how the transfer market actually works over the latest knicker-wetting pish on this forum.

The initial point made was that we need haste. No. We need quality. We would like it quickly, in an ideal world, but given the choice between speed and quality, quality wins hands down and that was the rebuttal given.

Madton said we need players in quickly because a couple of injuries could cost us. It's a fact that we've got a thin squad and an injury to McHugh, for example, would be damaging as it'd leave us with one single senior attacker available in the form of Thompson, so it's perfectly reasonable to suggest that we'd want to plug that gap quickly.

Incidentally, moving quickly to add to your squad and adding quality aren't mutually exclusive. I'd like to think our manager knows what he wants and is spending time on identifying players who fit the bill in the run up to the window rather than reaching January and going "fuck, better see what's available."

Tidser clearly loves the club but I'd imagine Dundee would offer a multi year contract that we won't and give him a pay rise so couldn't really blame him if he goes.

He's probably thoroughly fed up being misused by morton managers as well.

On a positive note, he’s all organised for his career post-football with his massage business, and you’d imagine being based on this side of the country would be an advantage to that.

I’d hope though when it comes to negotiating Tidser’s next deal there’s a testimonial thrown into the equation. If we can’t match some like Dundee for wages, we might as well use what we can to sway him in favour of staying and reward him for his loyalty. If he signs a three year deal, that would take him to 12 years since originally signing, with a year and a half in Rotherham.

I don't think vikingTON would sanction a three year deal for Tidser mate.
