That is a marvellous goal from Andy Ritchie. Twenty minutes on the clock and Morton's supporters come alive. A goal which epitomises the control, the arrogance, the cheek of Andy Ritchie.

Here is a report on the postponed home game against Dumbarton that was eventually played on Saturday April 7, 1945:

League Cup game at home, at Cappielow Park, Greenock

Greenock Morton (1) 2 – 1 (0) Dumbarton

Scorer:  Henderson, McInnes.

Team: McFeat, Highet, Fyfe, Campbell, Aird, Whyte, Kelly, Garth, Henderson, McAloon, McInnes.

Morton played towards Port Glasgow in the first half.  Garth forces a corner, taken by Kelly, which is cleared.  McAloon is fouled, and a Fyfe free-kick goes back to McAloon with a clear sight of goal – but his shot goes just over the middle of the Dumbarton crossbar.  Kelly next shoots past the left angle of post and bar, and a McInnes lob from a Kelly corner goes just over mid-crossbar, as does a neat Garth overhead try.  An irresistible Morton attack up the left ends with McAloon lobbing judiciously to the advancing HENDERSON, who traps the ball and homes low to the right of the goal, after feinting left.

Another Henderson shot is well-smothered by Hoey in the Dumbarton goal, and the ‘keeper also does well to clutch a Kelly corner.  Whyte shoots just past the left post.  Garth tries a bye-line run and pass back to Kelly, who hits a kneeling Henderson.  A free is awarded just outside the penalty area, but the speed of Whyte’s shot past the defensive wall beats everyone, Read and Filshire for Dumbarton eventually happy to concede only a corner.  Kelly’s in-swinging corner is well-held under the bar by Hoey.  McInnes concedes multiple offsides to end the first half action.

HT:  Greenock Morton 1-0 Dumbarton

The second half begins with a Kelly cross to McAloon, who passes to McInnes.  His cross-back into the area is just too far for the in-rushing Henderson.  McFeat then just holds a head-high lob try by by Reid, after a mis-understanding over offside.  Whyte batters the ball over the bar after a Henderson shot is returned out.  Hoey then holds well at the left post from a hard, high shot by McInnes, set up by McAloon.  A hard Kelly shot is also well held by Hoey.

Dumbarton are awarded a penalty after Reid is adjudged to have been downed by Aird.  Bramley for Dumbarton shoots the ball straight and low but McFeat manages to smother and save!  Reid however then does equalise for Dumbarton, his first-time shot after pivoting beating the diving McFeat high to the right of the goal.  McFeat then twists his leg trying to get to a Filshire cross, the resulting chance being missed narrowly by McAloney.  Nice work on the Dumbarton left lets Murphy send in a shot which glances off the Morton crossbar to Filshire.  His shot is parried by McFeat, who then also manages to push the rebound-shot from Hepburn past the post for a corner.  Both shots were high to Archie’s right.

A wild Garth try goes over the bar, and Morton then re-take the lead when a lucky-ish McINNES run-in near the goal-line on the left is finished with a low shot in typical Kelly-style at the narrowest of angles between post and ‘keeper.  Hoey then clears successive high tries at both posts before doing well to hold a powerful cross-shot in the centre of the goal.  McInnes then shoots into the side-netting before McFeat dives out at Reid’s feet in spectacular and safe style to preserve the Morton victory.

Best Morton player:  McFeat.

Referee:  D. Jackson (Glasgow) – no’ too bad.

2002 - Morton 1-4 Forfar (Kerr)

Dylan Kerr gave us the lead, which didn't last long. A completely inept defensive show saw Forfar pick us off at ease and get their fourth win out of four over us.

1988 - Morton 3-2 Rangers (Collins, Alexander, Turner)

We were already relegated and the visitors were already officially out of the title race.

Ground was far from full - midway through the first half a group of BB walked into the home end and stood in front of the Ton singing section. The police quickly moved them through the fence.

Collins hit a cross/shot from near the dugouts and it caught Woods off his line. Absolute scenes everywhere when Tommy Turner put us 3-1 up. The longest 10 minutes ever (until 2013) followed Durrant's goal.

Nasty one this. McPhee completely ripped us up that day. We would go on to win only one of our last five games.

1987 - Queen of the South 2-3 Morton (O'Hara, Robertson, Alexander)

Back when away fans were housed in a small corrugated shed. 1-0 down early on, Alex O'Hara headed a rare goal before the break. We  turned the screw in the 2nd half, going 3-1 ahead until late on.

Our push for promotion was dampened slightly on hearing that St. Mirren had beaten Hearts at Hampden in the semi-final.

2014 - Alloa Athletic 2-0 Morton

This defeat officially relegated us. The Alloa team included Michael Doyle, Graeme Holmes and Ross Caldwell.

2003 - Morton 2-0 Elgin City (Hawke, Bannerman pen)

A must-win after the previous week's defeat at Cliftonhill. A frustrating game until Hawke came on in the second half and swung things our way. Davie McGregor missed this due to a hairline fracture in his ankle and would miss the remaining four games also.

1997 - East Fife 1-4 Morton (Hawke 2, Mahood, Rajamaki)

With Derek Lilley away to Leeds, we were worried that goals may become a problem. Fortunately, it was only Jimmy Bone's lot up next.

2013 - Morton 0-1 Dunfermline

Having lost the crunch game at Firhill, we slip up once again.

2011 - Queen of the South 1-4 Morton (Weatherson, Jenkins 2, Graham)

2010 - Morton 1-1 Ross County (Monti pen)

2002 - Stenhousemuir 2-3 Morton (Bannerman, Cannie, McPherson)

Our penultimate away game. Stenny keeper Andy Carlin got heaps of abuse in the second half but took it well, even applauding us at full time. Donkey Dave scored the late winner, securing his stab at the manager's job for next season.

Results elsewhere meant we were definitely finishing in the bottom two.

1996 - Hamilton 0-1 Morton (Rajamaki)

Played at Firhill. We kept up the pressure at the top. Three games to go.

1994 - Hamilton 3-2 Morton (Alexander, Mahood)

Whilst we'd have to wait 4 days to officially secure it, for me THIS was the game which relegated us.

After a goalless first half, we went 2-0 up after an hour in our last ever game at Douglas Park - where we'd not won since 1966 - and we fell apart. With 10 minutes to go we were 3-2 down and Rowan Alexander is back conceding a penalty (which they missed).

1991 - Morton 0-4 Hamilton

2006 - Raith Rovers 1-1 Morton (McLaren)

A meaningless game which I recall for two reasons. First was a woman who spent the game screaming at Jim McInally. Second was a group guys sitting not far behind us, who spent the second half taking the piss out of anyone who was trying to encourage the team back into the game. They eventually got fed up and left, just in time to miss our stoppage time equaliser.

1995 - Morton 0-0 Queen of the South

The game which could have proven costly to our promotion/title challenge. Neil Orr completely bossed the game in defence for Queens. It was only 0-0 because of David Wylie - one save in particular where he clawed it back from under the bar when a goal looked certain. Incredibly, all the games in the 2nd Division ended in draws.

1989 - Morton 3-0 Kilmarnock (Collins, Clinging, Alexander)

A routine win against a dire Killie side, now looking very much a stick-on for relegation.

This result made it all simple. Win our game in hand on against Airdrie on Wednesday and we were promoted to the Premier League.
