Squad and transfers 2019/20

We all have high hopes for Hopkin but if he is having to work with a much-reduced budget, realistically, we are trawling the lower leagues for next season's squad. The signings so far are uninspiring but at least we have Dykes to save our season - thanks JJ!

Tumilty had some howlers last season but he definitely picked up and looks to have something about him. Maybe not the best of defenders but going forward he looked decent and was always eager to get involved. Give him some shooting practice and he might provide a few goals as he wasn’t scared to shoot. Obviously having him improve defensively would be nice too but I can think of worse players we could have kept on. Happy with him staying.

It's not about pessimism, it's that people seem to think "he done it at Livvi" is a guarantee of success. There's being optimistic and there's thinking that he's some sort of messiah.

Okay, let's not say pessimism then - that's more a personal thing as I'm such a miserabilist.

My cautious optimism for the future is tempered by a sense of realism, an understanding that success is far from a given and is not likely to happen immediately, etc. I think we're pretty much on the same page, here.

On Tumilty:

I definitely think there's potential to become a good attacking full back. With more experience, the right coaching and, hopefully, some good, strong defenders to play alongside him I would expect him to really come on next season. Fingers crossed all of that can come to pass.

Don't get me enough wrong, I have high hopes for Hopkin but isn't there a danger that we're assigning mythological status to his work at Livvi? He done a great job there but its not some special formula that's guaranteed to work here.

Yes. Kept my powder dry til now, but 100%. I think he'll flop

TIME FOR CHANGE!

We have eight first-team players signed (excluding McAlister and Tidser, but including Lyon.) He's made one eyebrow-raising signing (this Orsi character) and brought in another Championship regular with whom he's worked before (Jacobs.) Is it not a bit early for the knicker-wetting? Let's wait until he builds a squad of National League jobbers like Hartley did before we consign ourselves to failure, maybe?

Agreed

There’s a player there somewhere

There is a player in everyone but we can’t take chances any more on hope that they fulfil their potential.

He was unconvincing last season and in comparison, Doyle offered more.

There will be a bit of revisionism going on based on where we finished, neglecting how the season went and some of the god awful performances.

They will look at it as we finished in a comfortable 5th place position in the end. 3 more wins would have got us a playoff spot and we played the entire season without the striker we had pinned our hopes on for goals (and got snaked out of our main alternative on the last day of the summer window in Rudden) who, as it all panned out, probably would have fired us to a playoff spot.

That mentality of us not being that far away in a rancid league, with it likely to be equally as rancid next year, will give them hope with a competent manager in charge.

As long as the squad isn't the complete downgrade that we all fear.

Agreed. How many times did we say last season that we had a more than capable squad but the manager was a diddy? Give Hopkin a chance. He knows what he's doing.

There's a storm on the horizon

And for that I can't see the sun

For I'll keep a waiting on the pavement

For the ice cream van to come

Or we can just put our trust in the Manager to build the squad the way he see fit? I’m pretty sure a guy with his record as player and manager will know a wee bit more than all of us combined about what he requires!

We're probably overestimating how good the other teams will be. Most teams will be struggling to put a good full time squad together on the money available.

Peter Weatherson is the greatest player since Ritchie, and should be assigned 'chairman for life'

Agreed. Dunfermline have picked up a couple of highly rated lower league players, but are supplementing that with Hartley's Falkirk level English regens.

Aye, pretty much.

If we were merely competently ran last season we'd have made the play-offs for sure, so if we have a comparable squad then I'm confident that Hopkin is good enough to get the most from it and get us a top-half finish. My point earlier was more about expecting him to be able to "do a Livvi" with any given group of players, which I think is painting an overly rosey picture.

It's far too early to make any kind of judgements though, but should we end up with a squad that's comprised mostly of guys like Dykes, Orsi and the Forfar geezer rather than having them into make up numbers then we're in for a stinker, Hopkin or no Hopkin. On the other hand, if it turns out those guys are merely there to bulk up the squad and it's mostly the likes of Jacobs, we should be fancying our chances. With a smaller squad the title is probably beyond us either way, but the top end of the table is there to be aimed at - nobody else is particularly great either, so there's no reason we shouldn't be looking up the way.
