TorontoTon
Here is a first-hand report on the home win against Third Lanark on November 25, 1944: 7th League Trophy match at home, at Cappielow Park Greenock Morton (2) 3 – 1 (0) Third Lanark Scorers: Orr (2), Campbell. Team: McFeat, Whyte, Nimmo, Aird, Blair, Campbell, McAloon, Orr, Crum Garth, Kelly. Morton played toward Greenock town centre in the first half. Orr sends a shot wide after initial Morton pressure. Harrower for Thirds has a nice break but hits the wrong side of the post trying to beat McFeat. Kelly over-elaborates with a shot, and then Aitken for Thirds hits one over the bar with an open goal in front of him, although McIntosh was subsequently penalised for being offside. Dawson then curves a shot onto the Morton side-netting at head height, and a softish Aitken shot was then held easily low-down by McFeat. Kelly for Thirds is a saviour when he heads away from a dangerous Morton break. Garth heads over an Aird free from the right, and Orr’s header is too soft to beat the alert McBride in the Third Lanark goal. A Garth whiz-shot with unusual force was then just held, as the keeper dived to his left. Orr misses with another soft header, and then Blair gives away a corner but nothing comes of it for the visiting team. Orr sends a shot over the top from a McAloon cross, and then Dawson goes close for Thirds, scraping the bar with McFeat wondering. Garth at the left corner flag crosses to Crum on the line, and his neat flick was just intercepted by McBride. A Kelly break led to a siege on the Third Lanark goal, only ended when Garth sent a curving shot beyond the right-hand post. Orr’s opportunism then almost led to the opening goal, when he slid a leg through Barclay’s legs to divert an attempted back-pass. The ball rolled across the entire width of the goal, but no Morton forward was there to convert. An Aird free kick saw McBride spectacularly tip the ball away from Orr’s head, but after a free from Campbell, ORR made no mistake when the goalie could only push out his initial 25-yard shot, sending the rebound comfortably over the grounded goalie for the opening goal. Dawson for Thirds then sent a crashing shot across the goal at waist height, but no-one was able to convert. Whyte then clears from a subsequent scramble in the Morton goalmouth. Aitken beat four Morton players before finally being dispossessed, and a Garth try goes wide. Morton then go two up just before half-time with CAMPBELL, after his free-kick was returned, sending an oblique 20 yard rocket unexpectedly home at the low left corner of the Wee Dublin end goal. HT: Morton 2-0 Third Lanark ORR opened the second half by extending Morton’s lead, tapping home at the second attempt from a Garth cross, after McBride was only able to push out the first try with his feet. McIntosh then had a break but sent a poor effort into the side netting. A Kelly corner sees Aird and Garth rush on, with Aird pushing Garth and in doing so causing an injury and the diverted header to go over the bar. Aitken’s shot for Third’s was then returned to Harrower who shoots home over McFeat to pull a goal back. Aird sends a forward pass towards Crum past Barclay, but McBride comes out and ‘knees’ to Balunas who clears. McFeat then gathers a bouncing Harrower cross. A dog then invades the pitch and does not leave until visiting player Bolt persuades it to finally cross the sidelines. McAloon then beats three men but hits the post with a shot from just four yards out, the rebound being cleared. McFeat has some luck as he comes out to challenge a break, Harrower losing the ball to the Morton ‘keeper. McFeat then holds a Cameron shot well at chest height to the left of the goal. A goal-line clearance of a Kelly header by Thirds after a Campbell cross was the last action before the final whistle. Best Morton player: Campbell.Referee: G. Bruce of Paisley.
