Numan never really hit the spot for me but I've loved the synth since the early stuff of Walter (now Wendy) Carlos in the late 60's. TiD should be forced to listen to the Buggles for the rest of his miserable existence in penance for his heresy.

CHC,

I have to say, whatever it is that your daughter is studying seems to be a really shit and pointless subject. I mean - synths!?!

Also, a while back there was a load of similar questions from the same direction about the Scottish Referendum. None of this will help her become the next Ayn Rand or discover a cure for the common cold.

The Scottish Referendum questions were for my older daughter.

Enlightenment and education takes many forms Paul, and what may seem 'pointless' to you or me may be enriching and meaningful to others.I agree with you to some extent, neither of my daughters will change the world or find a cure for the common cold. But they're trying to make their way in the world and they're both fundamentally good and decent human beings who have respect for others. For me that's all that matters and I'm immensely proud of both of them. Be assured that that will not be diminished by your attempts to belittle them or their career choices.

It's kinda sad that a friendly request to help my daughter comes against reactions like this. I suppose it was naive of me to post it on here in the first place, on the stupid assumption that at the end of the day despite our personal differences we're willing to help each other out in a spirit of friendship and good will.

Lesson learned.

Fairy nuff, if it means anything to you I completed both surveys. Maybe not with the answers which you (or your daughter's) expected, the Referendum one was a bit leading if I recall correctly, but I completed them nonetheless.

Ach cmon, how on earth could how much or how little I spend on "Synths" possibly enrichen anyone's lives?

Have faith, maybe they will change the world someday or they may indeed change the world (or at least help shape the world) for some or someone one day. They are still young, they have their lives ahead of them and God only knows what will life have in store for them.

I'm not belittling anyone, not here anyway. And you have every reason to be proud of your family too. Good luck to them and whatever they end up doing.

It's a bit random though, isn't it? Synths? I know that Toby, Gerry and Cartoonhead listen to a bit of Kraftwerk now and again, but I doubt very much they'll be fannying about with Synths as a result. Serious advice, I reckon your daughter would have more luck and better answers on a messageboard for musicians or audio technicians rather than asking football supporters.

Surely there is a lesson which you could pass onto your daughters - do your research in the correct places and you'll get better results. Another one would be not to spit the dummy out when you don't get the replies which you expect.

Lesson learned.

See above about spitting dummies.

Well that's one question in one survey in one module of a degree course, so in itself it won't. But I think you know fine what I was meaning and you're just being facetious.

Not really that random for the degree course she's doing (Sound Engineering) and of course she's also asking in more relevant sites than this. You're probably right that this survey won't apply to or be of interest to many on here, but it did say it was a synth survey in the subtitle and in the text of my original post. Didn't think it would do any harm to ask though.Bit surprised it's got this kind of reaction, but I know by now I shouldn't be.

Thanks for filling it out but neither me or my daughter 'expect' any answers, so that's a strange comment to make. That's kinda the whole point of a survey, you know, to find that stuff out, so the survey was published without any expectations other than gathering information. So as long as you answered them truthfully, that's the only thing we 'expect', and if you did that then we genuinely appreciate it no matter what your actual answers were.

Regarding the referendum survey, it took examples of negative campaign ads from both sides and tried to find out how effective they were. It absolutely wasn't leading in any way as exactly the same questions were asked about each ad, and there was the same number from both campaigns. If the questions had been leading the results and conclusions drawn from it would have been discounted at the assessment stage, which didn't happen. And in any case, the survey was after the referendum, so why would it be leading? There would be nothing to be gained and it would have unnecessarily jeopardised her chances of getting a degree. As above though, I appreciate you taking the time to complete it as it needed 'yes' and 'no' voters in approximately the same numbers to make any conclusions statistically significant.

I confess that I started to fill out the survey the minute I saw it cos I don't mind doing any of these for people studying, but I didn't complete it cos all of my answers were at the bottom end of the scale (pardon the pun) and I think it would only have skewed her data.

Stand by my comments about synths though.

Sledge hammer can also be used.

Two Uniteds but the soul is one, as the Busby Babes carry on.

Worrryingly for me, I am in the same boat as TiD - bit like on here, I had nothing useful to add.

Please also feel free to pass on my commiserations to your daughters that they ended up with you as their dad - life can be really shite sometimes.
